First Bottle

We've been storing a couple of containers of breast milk in the fridge for a few days now just waiting for the right moment to give the old bottle a try. Both of us were extremely excited, but a little terrified of the bottle because of everything I've read about the dangers of introducing it too soon: Nipple confusion! Feeding strikes! Overfeeding! Reduced milk supply! However, the prospect of me being able to leave the apartment for more than an hour won over.

Six weeks seems to be the general consensus on introducing a bottle, but since Miles has never had any feeding problems and I certainly haven't had any problems with my milk supply, we decided that waiting until the one month mark was long enough. So, for his afternoon feeding we heated up a bottle and I held my breath as Jesse settled onto the couch. Miles looked right up at him with his piercing gaze, grimaced a little at the weird thing being put into his mouth, and drank the entire 2oz happily.

I breathed a sigh of relief and took a leisurely walk to the grocery store. Miles freaked out while I was gone and tried to devour his fist. I then nursed him for another 10 minutes when I returned. Guess we don't have to worry about nipple confusion. And we'll try 3oz in the bottle next time.

One Month Old

Miles is one month old today! We weighed him earlier this week and he's about 10 1/2 lbs of pure baby chub. Jesse and I picked out an outfit especially for the photo shoot this morning. He seemed to dig the snap shirt.

He also enjoyed some smooches from his dad.

Personal Grooming

Miles enjoys his baths, but he may enjoy having his hair combed even more.

Little Smile and New Tricks

Jesse managed to capture a small smile on video today and since he was in such a good mood, I decided to let him show off some of his tricks -- tracking colorful objects with his head.

Smiling Miles

Miles started cracking his first smiles this week while awake. He's been smiling in his sleep for a little while now, but seems to really recognize faces and respond to our constant high-pitched babbling about how darn cute he is.

Tummy Time

Miles is three weeks old today. He tolerated tummy time for about three minutes.

Two Week Check-Up

Miles went in for his two week check-up today and he's doing well. The pediatrician walked in and said, "How's my little chubster." And he is a chubster indeed:

Weight: 9lb 8oz (64th percentile)
Head: 14 3/4" (50 percentile)
Length: 21 1/2" (71st percentile)

His weight gain was about 13oz in a week. Dr. Sears says that the average breastfed newborn gains about 4-7oz. a week in the first month. No wonder his newborn clothes no longer fit!

Two Weeks Old

Miles turned two weeks old yesterday and started to lift and hold up his head (much to the surprise of the grandparents). It's a much more controlled motion than the bobbing motions he was making in the hospital when he was just a few hours old. When lying on his back, he also moves his head from side to side to track a red lady bug stuffed doll if it's raised about 6-8 inches in front of his face.

First Bath

Miles' umbilical cord still isn't fully healed, so we weren't able to give a full bath. At two weeks old, his first wash was more of a sponge bath with the help of his Grandmom.

He loved being naked and was especially excited about the warm water when he had his hair washed.

Active Sleeper

Miles was much more relaxed after coming home from the hospital and we soon found out that he prefers to sleep like a starfish (not unlike his dad). At 5 days old, he lifted his legs and rolled over onto his side one night, scaring the crap out of his mom. The pediatrician said that there is no danger, but we swaddle him at night now to keep his flying arms in check.
